What are some home/natural remedies for heartburn?

Hi! I am 14 years old, and about a week ago I started getting really bad heartburn at night, the kind where it feels like your swallowing a knife when you swallow, and drinking water doesn’t really help. If I take an antacid such as Rolaids, it temporarily relieves the pain, but it always comes back, and lasts through the morning until I have been awake for about an hour and a half. I have stopped taking the Rolaids because they are very bad for your kidneys, and I drink ice water before bed. I also have started sleeping on my left side, because I heard that doing so lessens the chance of the stomach acids coming into your esophogus. I read that a teaspoon of honey can help heal your esophogus and the ring around the entrance to your stomach(I forget what it’s called), and that apple cider vinegar helps. So I was wondering what you have tried, or if you know of someone who has tried something that works that is natural and isn’t Rolaids or Tums or anything like that. I also heard that drinking a lot of milk can cause heartburn, and I am a milk chugger, but too I heard that milk can help heartburn. Thank you for your help!

Thumbs up on the apple cider vinegar! It’s Grandma’s secret!

I think that I have read that bicarbonate of soda aka baking soda, diluted in water will help, but am not 100% sure – go to the arm & hammer website to see if the info is there. As far as the acid reflux, if you sit more upright while sleeping, then the acids will be less likely to go up your throat

Hmm it’s unusual to have heartburn at your age. Maybe don’t eat for at least 2 hours before you go to sleep – i know that’s what caused my heartburn when i got it a couple years ago. I just rode it out, couldn’t find a working solution…sorry!

How to best relieve symptoms of acid reflux involves making lifestyle changes such as avoiding certain foods, losing weight, stopping smoking and exercising regularly. A wide variety of over-the-counter medications such as antacids, anti-gas or ant-flatulence drugs, oral suspension and H-2 receptor blockers are available to provide temporary relief.

Avoid the overuse of over-the-counter medications as they may cause side effects such as constipation and diarrhea. For more frequent and severe episodes of acid reflux, your doctor may prescribe medications such as proton pump inhibitors. If lifestyle changes and prescription medications fail to offer improvement, surgery may be recommended.

Natural Remedies

Natural and holistic treatments have been used for centuries to treat and provide symptomatic relief for digestive problems. Homeopathic remedies are safe and effective to use for people of all ages without unwanted side effects. Carefully selected ingredients such as Calc phos, Carbo veg, Nat phos, Mag carb and Silicea helps to neutralize acid in the stomach as well as cleanse and eliminate toxins from the body and relieve symptoms of heartburn, indigestion, bloating and gas.

often the cause for heartburn is weakness of the cardiac sphincter between the esophagus and the stomach due to nerve interference. to check for nerve interference, see an hio method chiropractor.
